A Set of Solutions to Parfit’s Problems

چکیده

In Part Four of Reasons and Persons Derek Parfit searches for “Theory X,” a satisfactory account of well-being. Theories of well-being cover the utilitarian part of ethics but don’t claim to cover everything. They say nothing, for example, about rights or justice. Most of the theories Parfit considers remain neutral on what well-being consists in; his ingenious problems concern form rather than content. In the end, Parfit cannot find a theory that solves each of his problems. In this essay I propose a theory of well-being that may provide viable solutions. This theory is hedonic—couched in terms of pleasure—but solutions of the same form are available even if hedonic welfare is but one aspect of well-being. In Section 1, I lay out the “Quasi-Maximizing Theory” of hedonic well-being. I motivate the least intuitive part of the theory in Section 2. Then I consider Jesper Ryberg’s objection to a similar theory. In Sections 4-6 I show how the theory purports to solve Parfit’s problems. If my arguments succeed, then the Quasi-Maximizing Theory is one of the few viable candidates for Theory X.

A New Iterative Algorithm for Multivalued Nonexpansive Mappping and Equlibruim Problems with Applications

In this paper, we introduce two iterative schemes by a modified Krasnoselskii-Mann algorithm for finding a common element of the set of solutions of equilibrium problems and the set of fixed points of multivalued nonexpansive mappings in Hilbert space. We prove that the sequence generated by the proposed method converges strongly to a common element of the set of solutions of equilibruim proble...

On Fixed Point Results for Hemicontractive-type Multi-valued Mapping, Finite Families of Split Equilibrium and Variational Inequality Problems

In this article, we introduced an iterative scheme for finding a common element of the set of fixed points of a multi-valued hemicontractive-type mapping, the set of common solutions of a finite family of split equilibrium problems and the set of common solutions of a finite family of variational inequality problems in real Hilbert spaces. Moreover, the sequence generated by the proposed algori...

Pareto-optimal Solutions for Multi-objective Optimal Control Problems using Hybrid IWO/PSO Algorithm

Heuristic optimization provides a robust and efficient approach for extracting approximate solutions of multi-objective problems because of their capability to evolve a set of non-dominated solutions distributed along the Pareto frontier. The convergence rate and suitable diversity of solutions are of great importance for multi-objective evolutionary algorithms. The focu...

Constrained Multi-Objective Optimization Problems in Mechanical Engineering Design Using Bees Algorithm

Many real-world search and optimization problems involve inequality and/or equality constraints and are thus posed as constrained optimization problems. In trying to solve constrained optimization problems using classical optimization methods, this paper presents a Multi-Objective Bees Algorithm (MOBA) for solving the multi-objective optimal of mechanical engineering problems design. In the pre...

An Optimum Algorithm for Single Machine with Early/Tardy Cost

The problem of determining the sequence of a set of jobs with the objective function of minimizing the maximum earliness and tardiness in one machine is studied. &#10 Production systems like JIT are one of the many applications of the problem. This problem is studied in special cases and their optimal solutions are introduced with simple orders. In general, some effective conditions for ne...
